Going back to your everyday life might not always be easy. You might feel a bit overwhelmed by the contrast between the end of a wonderful au pair experience and the uncertainty of your next steps.  But don’t despair, there are many great options you can choose from, to start building the life you’ve always dreamt of!

You’d like to start studying? Apply to university

If you’ve always dreamt about attending university, then you might want to choose a course of study and look through the course offer of the different universities, whether in your country or abroad.

Keep in mind that if you get a language certification during your time as an au pair, you’ll be able to attend university as an international student wherever you want: this could really be an amazing experience!

If your passion for kids is what pushed you to become an au pair, then these are some of the best courses for you:

  • Child Psychology, Development Psychology or General Psychology

  • Education/Early Childhood Development

  • Education/Special Education

  • Speech Therapy

On the other hand, if you are more keen on languages, want to learn new ones, become a teacher or a translator, then you can check these courses:

  • Interpreting

  • Translation

  • Languages and Cultures for Tourism and International Commerce

  • Foreign Languages and Literature

  • International Relations

Which ever way your wishes are taking you, you should always dream big!
The offer is wide and, thanks to the skills you gained during your time abroad as an au pair, you can be sure that you’ll have an extra kick.

If you’d already got a Bachelor or a Master Degree before going abroad as an au pair, then you could opt for a quality master and get specialised.

You don’t want to go back home yet? Look for a job in your dream city

You’re already in a foreign country, so why don’t you take this opportunity to collect the necessary documents and start looking for a job right there, where your adventure began?

After all, you already know the city, have probably built friendships there and your host family is there if you need help.

Depending on your interests, you can explore different fields and you might very likely be able to start using your new language skills also in your new work area.

You can maybe start easy with a simple job in the gastronomy business or, since you now have experience working with children, you could help out in kindergartens. There are lots of possibilities, to get you started in the jobs’ world, until you find the perfect one!

You can’t choose between studying and working? Then do both!

It is very common for young people to work and study at the same time.
The best way to do this is to choose your study courses in the first place and then plan your mini job around them. In this way, you can make sure to give both the space they need, without collapsing with each other.

And here the choice is also wide: you can either take a course of study to which you will match your mini job (ex. You study education and work in a kindergarten aside) or „mix-and-match“ (ex. You study education but work in a restaurant).
The choice is really wide and the possibilities are endless!

Did you love being an au pair? Search for a new family in a new country

If you loved being an au pair, consider finding a new family in a different country for a new adventure. Moving to a new country allows you to immerse yourself in a different culture, learn a new language and meet new people, exactly the same way you did for your first au pair experience.
In this way you can enhance your skills, broaden your network and personally grow even more, becoming more independent, resilient and culturally aware. Also, you can learn a new language as well!
Each new family and country offers unique challenges and learning opportunities, enriching your understanding of the world and expanding your international connections.
