Being an au pair has completely changed my life!

I did my summer au pair in Tenerife

In August 2016, I travelled to Tenerife to spend 3 weeks with a family I had never met before. I was scared, nervous, but more than anything, excited. As soon as I met my host family at the airport, however, all my worries instantly disappeared - they were so happy and excited to see me that I instantly started to enjoy myself.

My family made sure that I was comfortable and happy every step of the way. We toured the island of Tenerife: climbing El Teide, dressing up for traditional festivals, swimming in natural rock pools, and many more memories that I will never forget. I have made so many friends even outside the family that will be part of my life forever. And as for my language skills, I didn't even notice my Spanish improving until I got back home and realised that when I spoke with a Spanish person, I could understand everything they said without even trying!

After a couple of days I became part of their family

Although I was paid to teach the children English, the reality was that after the first couple of days, I forgot that I was there to do a job. Instead, I became part of the family, and have never looked back. Before going to Spain, I didn't have a family here in England and have had to look after myself for a long time. However, now I can honestly say that I do have a family - and although we live far away from each other, we message daily and frequently skype each other. I went back to visit in February, they are coming here to visit me in summer, and I will go back again to spend Christmas with them. I know that whatever time it is, I have someone there who will listen to me. I'm hoping that in the future I will be able to change my surname to the family name :)
