Germany: Rise in the age limit for au pairs soon to be introduced

The age limit for au pairs in Germany is expected to be raised to 27 from 1 July 2013. This would be part of the proposed amendments to the law on the employment of foreigners.

On 1st July 2013 the German Federal Government is expected to introduce amendments to the law governing the employment of foreigners. Should the amendments enter into force, there would be two major changes for the au pairs and host families living in Germany:

The age limit for au pairs requiring a visa to enter Germany will increase from 25 to 27. Besides, host families in Germany will no longer be required to have German as their mother tongue. In the future, host families will merely be required to speak German on a daily basis.

However, the amendments to the regulation still need to be approved by the Federal Council before coming into effect on 1st July 2013. The age limit of 30 would further apply to EU au pairs.
