Register as a family

Placement period

Families in France may host an au pair in the context of the programme "stagiaire aide familial étranger" for the duration of 3 to 12 months. According to the French au pair contract the au pair stay can be extended by 6 months to a total of 18 months.

Work contents

Your au pair will take care of your children and help you with light housework. The exact tasks need to be well defined and included in your au pair contract. Furthermore, it is recommended that you inform your au pair what a typical day at your home looks like. Thus, the au pair can get an idea of their tasks beforehand.

Hosting an au pair implies higher living costs. After all, you will have another adult living at your home throughout the entire au pair placement.

Board and food

Your au pair is entitled to free board and food throughout their entire stay as an au pair. They should also have their own room.

Pocket money

You need to pay your au pair pocket money which corresponds to 75 to 90 times the amount of the so-called minimum garanti. The amount is re-evaluated every year. It currently amounts to between 267,75 € and 321,30 € per month. You need to define the exact amount you agreed upon with your au pair in the au pair contract. We recommend that you make out a receipt each time you pay the pocket money, especially if you pay in cash.

As a host family you have the status of an employer. Therefore, you need to register your au pair with the URSSAF and pay employers' contributions amounting to roughly 200 EUR per month. You will find more information on this topic on our page Contract, insurance, driving licence & Co.

Working hours

The time dedicated to tasks around the house and children must not exceed 5 hours per day and 30 hours per week, babysitting included. The working hours you agree upon must allow your au pair to participate in a French course.

Free time

Your au pair must have one day off per week. At least once a month this day should be a Sunday.

In France, there are no official regulations when it comes to the holidays au pairs are entitled to. Therefore, you need to come to an agreement with your au pair well in advance and define it under paragraph 4.2 of your au pair contract. We always recommend that au pairs who stay with their host families for a total of 12 months get 4 weeks off during this time. If your au pair stays with you for a shorter period of time, you can reduce the free days correspondingly.

Language course

It is compulsory for au pairs to participate in a French course for foreign citizens. Your au pair bears the cost of their languages course themselves. However, you as a host family should help them enrol in the language course, as you know your city well. If your au pair is a non-EU citizen, the enrolment into a language course is also a prerequisite for the issuing of a visa. The following institutions/organizations offer language courses: universities, adult education centres and other organizations. They offer French courses on an annual, term-time and summer basis.

Please note: According to French law, there is no minimum number of hours concerning the language course. However, if your au pair enters France on a visa, they may well be obliged to choose a language course which lasts at least 10 hours per week.
