Don't forget: the au pair contract, insurance etc.

Important issues you should definitely think about before heading to your host country: insurance, contract, driving licence and safety issues.

The au pair contract

You and your family should clarify in advance what you expect from each other and sign a contract in which the most important points are defined. Thus, you can avoid future disappointments. You should use the official au pair contract for Austria written in German.

You will find more useful information and details on the conditions of your au pair stay on our page Pocket money, working hours, time off etc.

Contract Termination

The contract can be cancelled by either party without stating a reason, provided a one-week notice period is respected.

Au pair insurance

In order to enjoy your au pair stay in Austria, having an insurance coverage for health and accident is one of the important points that you need to consider.

As an au pair, you should have a health insurance coverage for your entire stay in Austria. A health insurance can be taken out at a private insurance company. The insurance cost is to be paid by the au pairs themselves. Any foreign health insurance is only sufficient if the benefits are also granted in Austria.

Please note that au pairs from non-EU countries need to provide evidence that they benefit from full health insurance cover when applying for their au pair visa.

The accident insurance will be paid by your host family. They need to register you with the Austrian social insurance (according to the General Social Insurance Act – ASVG). The host family pays contributions for accident insurance to the Gebietskrankenkasse.

Driving licence

You should clarify beforehand if your host family expects you to drive their car. Should this be the case, you ought to find out if your driving licence remains valid in your host country. You might need to apply for an international driving licence.

What happens in case of damage? Who bears the costs? You should talk this over with you host family and jot down everything.
