Summer au pair

Keywords:Summer au pair

A summer au pair typically lives with a host family for a short period of time during the summer holidays. The duration of the stay is usually between one and three months. Summer au pairs perform the same tasks as long-term au pairs: they support their host families with child care and light housework. Both long- and short-term au pairs receive the same pocket money and have the same number of working hours. Just like long-term au pairs, summer au pairs strive to improve their language skills and get to know a new culture whilst living abroad. Sometimes, they can also accompany their host families on holiday, taking care of the children during this time.

Employing a summer au pair is a great idea for families who are unable to take their holiday during school holidays and therefore need a child care solution during this time. The summer placement for au pairs also suits young students, who wish to go abroad to work as au pairs during their term break. Furthermore, it is an ideal introduction for both au pairs and host families who have not experienced au pairing before and are unsure as whether a long-term placement would suit them.

One last point to note: When communicating with au pairs or host families from a different hemispere to you, bear in mind that whilst in the northern hemisphere, summer is in July, in the southern hemisphere it is in January!

Summer au pairs are most sought after by families in countries where children have longer summer holidays (2-3 months). For example in France, Italy, Spain, as well as in Germany and Ireland. As host countries often have different holiday periods to your home country, try to be as flexible as possible and don't limit your stay to coincide with your home country's holiday period.

This includes your start date and the duration of your stay. • When do I have to start searching if I want to be a summer au pair?
    Au pair Jenny, USA

Fundamentally your search doesn't differ from the usual search to work as an au pair. If you need a visa for your host country, you'll need to start looking about 6 months beforehand. If you are an au pair from the EU, travelling to another EU country, you'll need about 3 months. However even in May, many summer au pairs still manage to find suitable host families.

  • I would really like to find an English-speaking host family for the summer. Where is best to look?
    Au pair Maria, Spain

In European countries the need for summer au pairs is relatively high. Of course the classic countries to look are Great Britain and Ireland, but families here are in high demand. Therefore it's worth looking for alternatives; fluent English is also spoken by the majority of the population in the Netherlands and in Scandinavia. You could improve your English here and at the same time increase your chances of finding a suitable host family.

  • In some countries there are certain regulations stating that an au pair stay must be a minimum of 3 months. How can I legally work in these countries as a summer au pair?
    Au pair Inka, Sweden

If you want to go to an EU- or EFTA-country as an au pair and are a citizen or the EU- or EFTA yourself, you have the right to free movement, which permits every EU- or EFTA citizen to live and work in another EU or EFTA state. However to be on the safe side, always have a look at the regulations for au pairs in your chosen host country, as different countries may have specific regulations for au pairs. In some countries like in the USA there is definitely not a summer au pair programme. The corresponding J1-Visa for the USA can only be applied for once in a lifetime, thus it may be better to go to the USA for a longer period of time, to make the most of this year long visa.

  • How much pocket money do summer au pairs get?
I would like to take our summer au pair on holiday with us, how do I go about it?

    Host mum Guia, Italy

Au pairs, whether staying with you for just the summer or a longer period of time, are entilted to the equal amounts of pocket money and free board and lodging, regardless of whether they look after your children in your family home or whilst they are on holiday with your family in a hotel. It is important that you make your au pair completely aware of their responsibilites in advance of their stay.
