Insurance for EU au pairs in EU countries

Citizens from the EU, who wish to work as an au pair in another EU country, need to consider the following: in principle, everyone with a statutory health insurance policy can benefit from coverage within the EU.

Generally the coverage only comprises primary health care "as appropriate". Standards of primary health care may vary from country to country. Additional au pair insurance can bridge the gap and compensate for missing services as well as offer important additional health services, such as return transport in case of illness.  Whether it is the au pair or the host family who bear the insurance costs, will depend on the conventions of the host country.

Our tips:
  • Ask the insurer: What kind of coverage is offered by the health insurance. For how long is the insurance valid? Are all the services fully valid in the host country?
