Requirements for au pairs

Here's what you need to be an au pair In Germany

EU and EFTA citizens

  • You are between 17 and 30 years old.
  • You have basic knowledge of the German language.
  • You are not married and have no children.
  • You can afford the trip to Germany.

Non-EU citizens

  • You are between 18 and 26 years old.
  • You have basic knowledge of the German language (at least level A1).
  • You are not married and have no children.
  • You can afford the trip to Germany.
  • You would like to work as an au pair in Germany for a minimum of 6 months and a maximum of 12 months.
  • You have not yet been an au pair in Germany.

You fulfil all the requirements? Terrific! Germany is waiting for you. 

You don't fulfil the requirements? Then unfortunately you cannot become an au pair in Germany. Our tip: Think about an au pair placement in another great host country. Check now in which countries you can become an au pair. Perhaps it would also be possible for you to come to Germany with a Working Holiday Maker Visa. Please clarify this directly with the responsible authorities.

Requirements for host families

Here's what you need to be a host family in Germany:

  • There is at least one child under the age of 18 living in your household.
  • At least one parent has German or EU citizenship.
  • Your au pair should take care of your children and do light housework.
  • They speak German in their daily lives.
  • You are not from the same country as the au pair.
